Mommy Makeover

Motherhood can be one of the most rewarding events in a woman's life. But with the joy come the physical demands of pregnancy and childbirth, which can leave a woman's body much different than it once was. To address these changes, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Max Gouverne is pleased to offer a customized procedure that incorporates popular breast and body treatments such as tummy tuck and breast augmentation surgeries into one operation called a mommy makeover. He has helped many women from the Corpus Christi, Texas, area who wanted to tone, tighten, and improve their bodies, helping them restore their figures and their confidence.

The Consultation

The initial consultation for a mommy makeover is a thorough, one-on-one appointment during which Dr. Gouverne carefully evaluates your areas of concern so you can plan your transformation. The major appeal of a mommy makeover is that each procedure is completely tailored to the unique needs of the patient. Although there are differences in every surgery, the typical mommy makeover incorporates at least 2 of the following procedures:

It's also fairly common to incorporate a facial procedure, such as facelift surgery or an injectable treatment, into your mommy makeover.

If you are undergoing breast augmentation, you will likely try on implant sizers or use VECTRA® 3-D imaging at your consultation or during another appointment. Dr. Gouverne listens carefully to your concerns and suggests the treatments that most align with your goals and your lifestyle. Although most mommy makeovers are performed as single procedures, some may be performed in stages depending on the patient's overall health or personal preferences. Regardless of the specifics of your procedure, Dr. Gouverne ensures that you know exactly what to expect thanks to a thorough consultation at our Corpus Christi office.

The Procedure

Your mommy makeover is performed while you are under general anesthesia. The technique Dr. Gouverne uses depends on the specifics of your surgery.

If your mommy makeover includes breast augmentation, Dr. Gouverne makes an incision either around your areolas, along the creases of your breasts, or in your armpits. He creates a pocket within your existing breast tissue and adds your implants. Once he is satisfied with their placement and symmetry, he closes the incisions with sutures.

If your mommy makeover includes a tummy tuck, Dr. Gouverne typically makes a horizontal incision that extends from hip to hip as low on your abdomen as possible to ensure the resulting scar can be hidden beneath clothing and swimwear. Depending on your needs, he removes excess fat deposits, surgically tightens your abdominal muscles, and removes loose or hanging skin. He then closes the incision with sutures.

Finally, if your mommy makeover includes liposuction, Dr. Gouverne uses power-assisted liposuction to loosen your unwanted fat before extracting it. Power-assisted liposuction, or PAL, uses a vibrating cannula instead of a stationary one to ensure a more precise result. Power-assisted liposuction may be performed on larger areas of fat, such as your thighs, or smaller, more targeted areas, such as your ankles, neck, or chin.

A mommy makeover is generally an outpatient procedure, and you'll be permitted to return home after a brief period of observation. The safety of a combination procedure such as mommy makeover is well documented, and Dr. Gouverne prioritizes your health and well-being. Patients benefit by saving on cost and recovery time compared with undergoing separate procedures.

The Recovery

After your mommy makeover, the specifics of your recovery depend largely on the procedures you underwent. Prior to your surgery, Dr. Gouverne gives you a more precise idea of what you can expect.

In general, most mommy makeover patients require a long weekend off work and other daily obligations unless abdominoplasty is included, in which case recovery is about 10 days. You may be advised to avoid bending, heavy lifting, or reaching your arms over your head, especially if you underwent a tummy tuck or breast enhancement. Dr. Gouverne recommends that most mommy makeover patients have a loved one at home who is willing to assume some additional responsibilities during this time.

Instead of or in addition to oral pain relievers, some patients may be given a pain pump to help them manage discomfort. This allows for careful control over any discomfort and helps patients avoid the use of narcotics during recovery. You can learn how to use your pain pump in the following video:

By following Dr. Gouverne's instructions for caring for yourself after surgery, as well as listening to your body and doing your best to avoid overextending yourself, your recuperation should be relatively comfortable and uneventful.
