Double Chin Treatment

To my patients

We will be introducing a new drug KYBELLA™ previously known as ATX 101 for the nonsurgical treatment of double chin. (in 2-5 sessions of injections) This represents a significant addition in the way we treat double chin deformity

Traditionally the best way the double chin was treated was with direct excision of the neck fat (often with the addition of a chin implant in a weak jaw) as part of the facelift surgery. Inpatients that did not require the face lift neck liposuction was offered. This was a rather risky operation riddled with postoperative deformities and occasional post-op bleeders. Clearly this was not a great option. Injection with Kybelle fills this void wonderfully.

KYBELLA™ is a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called, “double chin.”
Together will design a customized treatment plan to help you improve your chin profile. Many patients experience visible contouring of their chin profile in two to four treatment sessions spaced at least one month apart. Up to 6 treatments may be administered.
KYBELLA™ has been the focus of a global clinical development program involving over 20 clinical studies with more than 2,600 patients worldwide, of which over 1,600 have been treated with KYBELLA™.

In the pivotal Phase III clinical trials:

• 68.2% of patients responded to KYBELLA™, compared to 20.5% of patients who responded to placebo, based on validated physician and patient measurements
• 79% of patients treated with KYBELLA™ reported satisfaction with the appearance of their face and chin
• After being treated with KYBELLA™, patients reported improvement in self-perception, including feeling happier and younger based on their chin profile, as well as feeling less embarrassed, less self-conscious, less overweight and less bothered by submental fullness
• KYBELLA™ can cause serious side effects, including trouble swallowing or nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness. I suspect this was due to injection errors by non-surgeons. The most common side effects of KYBELLA™ include: swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness in the treatment area.

The cost of the treatment is not inexpensive due to the high drug cost ($3000 for 2 sessions and $1500 for each subsequent treatment spaced 4-6 months apart) and is still somewhat in flux as the company was just sold to the medical device and drug giant Allergan.
It looks like it is quite effective as shown in the photographs below.

No surgery
minimal downtime for work
8 of 10 patients liked the treatment
avoids risky neck liposuction

Most patients showed bruising after the first treatment
Requires at least 2 treatments but more in a heavier neck treatments
Results are maximum one month after treatment completion
