Best Breast Implant Placement: Above or Below the Muscle?

The above the muscle vs. below the muscle controversy in breast implant placement continues to exist. Q: I’ve looked at a website and it says “under the muscle is better”. Which do you recommend? A: This is one of the most frequently asked questions at a breast augmentation consultation in my Corpus Christi practice. The short answer is that there is no simple answer that is the same for everyone. Beware of blanket recommendations that one surgeon only does it one way and that is the BEST way. Our Approach to Breast Implant Placement Three different breast implant placement methods … Continue reading

Micro Fat Grafting (MFG) for Facial Rejuvination

Fact: Signs of facial aging are due to volume depletion from loss of facial fat. In 2013, researchers presented a scientific paper at the annual meeting of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) in New York. The results were shocking! Researchers presented years of sequential 3-D photographs of individual faces. The measured parameters all showed significant loss of facial volume over time. When the researchers showed each subject’s picture sequentially over time (~15 years), the audience saw that person age in front of their eyes. Many other parameters were looked at; such as the jowls, the bags under … Continue reading

New Technologies Drive Increase in Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is awaiting the results of their annual members’ survey for 2013. While the full results are not yet available, ASPS did offer a sneak peak of what they expect to see. Breast augmentation is still the most popular cosmetic procedure in the U.S., followed by rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, liposuction, and facelifts. ASPS speculates advances in cosmetic procedure technologies are behind the surge in cosmetic procedure growth. Never before have there been so many choices in breast augmentation, injectables, and body sculpting. One recent advancement in breast implant technology comes in the form of … Continue reading

Twins Show the Smoking Gun on Facial Aging

You will not be surprised to read that smoking is bad for you, however, you may be surprised to learn that smoking makes your face age more rapidly too. In their November 2013 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reported significant differences in facial aging between twins who smoke and their identical, non-smoking twin. The study, conducted at the Twin Days Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio, found the most significant differences in aging in the middle and lower third of the face. You can see more photos and read more about this study by … Continue reading

Breast Implant Evolution: From A to D

Like beauty and fashion, breasts have undergone an evolution over the history of human existence. Much has changed from average breast size to attitudes and breast enhancement materials. It’s hard to imagine a time when women used ox cartilage to augment their chests, but luckily we now have safe, FDA-approved saline and silicone breast implants in the hands of experienced, board-certified plastic surgeons. After looking at the demographics and positive feedback from the women who have had breast surgery, it’s no wonder that breast augmentation is a top plastic surgery procedure for the modern woman. The above information was taken from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) website. The mission of the ASAPS includes medical education, … Continue reading

Modern Pain Management

A lot has changed in pain management from the years when I was in training to become a cosmetic surgeon. The traditional treatment of post-surgical pain involved large doses of narcotics. Patients were given IV narcotics in the recovery room, and at home the pain was masked with large doses of oral pain pills. There were two problems with this approach. Many patients suffered debilitating nausea and vomiting, other patients were overmedicated and became extremely groggy and would suffer falls, and others could not move and get no relief at all. The modern approach to pain management has revolutionized pain … Continue reading

Read about Dr Gouverne's current research

I am pleased to announce my participation in an FDA sponsored investigation. As a principal investigator I am presently enrolling patients in this nationwide study about silicone-filled implants. Silicone-filled breast implants are investigational devices. An investigational device is one which has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although silicone-filled implants have been in use for nearly 30 years, the number of women who, now or in the past, have had silicone-filled breast implants is not known. Estimates generally exceed two million women. The FDA is concerned that there is not enough information about possible health … Continue reading
