Piercing's Popularity, Beyond the Ears

Half of the college students in a newly published survey said they had nontraditional body piercings — that is, other than for women’s earrings — and that almost 1 in 10 piercings produced an infection. Just under a quarter of the students reported having tattoos, but there were no medical complications from them, according to an article published in the January issue of The Mayo Clinic Proceedings. The survey of 454 undergraduates was conducted at the Pleasantville, N.Y., campus of Pace University by Dr. Lester B. Mayers, the director of the university’s sports medicine division. In an interview, Dr. Mayers … Continue reading

Hakl travels to Haiti

“Ah dear reader, ‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Dear ‘le docteur Max,’ permit me to share a few memories and reminisce of my recent trip to south Haiti of but a few days ago. Exercise Can Improve Your Sex Life

Studies Show Exercise Can Improve Your Sex Life Exercise is not only a well-documented means of maintaining muscle and losing fat, recent studies propose that it can also revitalize your sex life. In a February 1999 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, scientists found that sexual dysfunction is more likely among those with poor physical and emotional health, and plays a major role with negative experiences in sexual relationships and with overall well-being. Studying Sex and Exercise Sexual function is affected by general health, and the more you can do to improve your health by taking good … Continue reading

Cosmetic surgery for people over 65

OLDER PATIENTS BENEFIT FROM MODIFIED COSMETIC PLASTIC SURGERY TECHNIQUES Women and men age 65 and older accounted for 7 percent of cosmetic procedures performed in 2000, and the number of procedures performed on people in this age group has increased 352 percent since 1997, according to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Plastic surgeons say that there are special considerations when performing cosmetic surgery on older adults but that age, in itself, is not a contraindication to surgery. Skin elasticity, which gradually diminishes as we age, is one of the primary factors affecting the quality and … Continue reading

FDA and Botulinum Toxin Injections

Botulinum Toxin Injections Background: Botulinum toxin (BTX) injections , often referred to by the product names Botox® or Myobloc®, are biological toxins transformed into a therapeutic agent. Work with BTX began in the late 1960s to treat neurological disorders. Today, BTX is used for the treatment of frown lines, forehead furrows, “crow’s feet,” lines and wrinkles of the lower face, and even nasal muscles (to decrease nostril flaring). BTX injections have proven to be a very popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure; see current American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) statistics. Aesthetic plastic surgeons have found that the type of lines … Continue reading

Why Some People Won't Be Fit Despite Exercise

By GINA KOLATA Conventional wisdom has it that anyone who really wants to become fit can do so. Just walk or ride a bicycle, swim or run. Speed and endurance will improve and what was once hard will become easy. Lift weights, work with a trainer in a gym, and muscles will grow larger and stronger. But when a few intrepid scientists began asking if those beliefs were true, they found that fitness, like weight loss, has genetic underpinnings, making it inherently much easier for some to get fit than it is for others. And the facets of fitness are … Continue reading
