What is Botox? Botox is a purified protein produced by the clostridium botulinum bacterium.
What does Botox do? When injected into the muscles of the forehead, it blocks nerve impulses and as a result weakens the muscles that cause frowning. Over a period of several months, frown lines will become softer and often times completely disappear. Botox can also be injected into the muscles that affect crows feet and forehead lines.
How long does an injection of Botox last? The muscle weakness will last from three to six months at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, however, this weakness can last up to one year. The wrinkles or creases continue to stay improved or eliminated as long as the weakness persists.
Are there any side effects to this treatment? Botox has been used successfully for more than 10 years in ophthalmology and for several years in dermatology. Side effects are very rare.
Does a botox injection hurt? Initially there is a small sting. Once the injection is over there is no discomfort.
Does Botox affect any other facial expressions? No. Only your ability to frown is diminished or eliminated. Muscles responsible for all other facial expressions are not affected.
Are there better ways to treat frown lines? No. Currently, Botox is the best treatment specifically for wrinkles on the forehead and between the eyes. However, collagen injections, fat transfer and laser peels are also used to improve facial wrinkles.
