Collagen Injections-Are they Safe?

Collagen injections for the correction of facial wrinkles and lip enhancement have been used for many years. An allergic reaction to collagen is rare and shows up with your skin test. Most collagen sold in the US is of bovine origin. With major cattle problems in Europe, many very happy patients on long-term collagen replacement therapy are concerned about the origin of our product. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy does not exist in the United States. We have requested and received from the USDA certification that our collagen is safe. The herd is born and raised in the USA. The product is of USA origin only. They have not been fed renderings from other cattle. The animals are killed under the supervision of veterinarians in federally inspected plants. We feel reassured by this and we will continue to use collagen as a useful adjunct in our practice. It was interesting to learn that our request was the first in the US for this information. Of course, we already knew that our patients are the nation’s brightest.
